US pop singer Britney Spears wants her father's guardianship to be suspended so that she can draw up a prenuptial agreement with her fiancé Sam Asghari before her planned wedding. According to a motion filed in a Los Angeles court on Wednesday, the 39-year-old is in the process of hiring a family lawyer to work out a prenuptial agreement. However, this would require the consent of her father, Jamie Spears, in his role as guardian.
"Since Ms. Spears 'relationship with her guardian has broken down, further involvement from Mr. Spears would impede the ability to negotiate and complete a contract that everyone agrees is in Ms. Spears' best interests," it said in the court document. Therefore, the father's guardianship should be "suspended" at the next court hearing on September 29th. Instead, a temporary guardian should be appointed before the entire judicial guardianship is terminated.
Spears announced her engagement to Asghari in early September.
The 39-year-old published a short video on the Instagram online service showing her with a diamond ring.
Spears has been married twice.
Her first marriage in 2004 to a childhood friend Jason Alexander lasted only 55 hours before it was annulled.
The singer was then married to rapper Kevin Federline, with whom she has two children.
Spears has been in litigation with her father since last year to end his guardianship over her.
In the meantime, Jamie Spears has filed for an end to guardianship himself.
His daughter is now able to take her life into her own hands.
Admitted to the clinic in 2008
The pop star was temporarily forcibly admitted to a clinic in 2008 because of mental health problems.
The father then took over the guardianship of his daughter and thus, in addition to managing her personal interests, also took control of her property.
Guardianship made more and more headlines over the years.
Britney Spears complained in June in an emotional statement in court that she was "traumatized" and "depressed": "I just want my life back."
