On April 19, the Greens federal executive will propose who of the two party leaders Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck should take over the candidacy for chancellor in the federal election on September 26.
The Greens managing director Michael Kellner informed the state chairman and the party council in a letter that the news agency dpa has received.
The final decision on the candidate for chancellor will be made at the Green Party Congress from June 11th to 13th.
Top duo want to clarify K question beforehand
The Greens want to join the 40-year-old Baerbock and 51-year-old Habeck as a top duo in the federal election campaign.
Nevertheless, there should be a candidate for chancellor for the first time in the history of the party.
It has long been clear that only the two party leaders are eligible.
The two had said several times that they wanted to clarify the question among themselves first.
In the polls, the Greens have been on the up for months.
Most recently they were nationwide at over 20 percent and thus in second place behind the CDU and CSU.
The SPD wants to join the Bundestag election campaign with Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz as candidate for Chancellor.
The decision of the CDU CSU is still pending.
Their parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus (CDU) had recently pushed for a quick agreement.
