Canary eruption: the lava reaches the locality of La Laguna

(ANSA) - MADRID, OCTOBER 20 - The lava of the CumbreVieja volcano, erupting since September 19 in La Palma (one of the Canary Islands) has reached the locality of La Laguna, in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane: Iberian media report. According to the Efe news agency, the magma threatens areas of the locality such as a school and the central square. La Laguna, where around 1,200 people live according to the El País newspaper, was completely evacuated last week.


    Meanwhile, yesterday evening a seismic quake of magnitude 4.8 at 39 kilometers depth was recorded in the south-east of La Palma, the strongest since the beginning of the volcanic activity.


    So far the lava has swallowed over 811 hectares of land and destroyed or damaged about 2,000 buildings, including hundreds of houses, according to the European Copernicus system.
