Carles Puigdemont, former president of the Catalan government, was arrested on the island of Sardinia, Italy.
Puigdemont has been living in Belgium for the past four years and could be arrested if he returned to Spain, as he faces charges related to his activities in Catalonia's failed attempt to secede in 2017. A lawyer for the former president said they will go to European courts to defend their case.
