Champions League: tested positive for Covid, Raphaël Varane package for Real-Liverpool

For the second time in a row, Raphaël Varane will not start a match with Real Madrid.

But unlike that of Saturday against Eibar (2-0), he will not even be on the substitute bench.

Against Liverpool, this Tuesday evening during the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League (9 p.m.), it is for a completely different reason that he will not be in the game.

The central defender of the France team has tested positive for Covid-19, his club announced this Tuesday morning in a terse message on its website.

The former Lensois was placed in solitary confinement to observe a period of quarantine.

He will therefore also miss the "clasico", this next Saturday at the Bernabeu against Barcelona.

It's a big blow for Zinédine Zidane, his trainer, who himself tested positive two and a half months ago, and who already had to do without the services of Sergio Ramos but also Dani Carvajal in his defense.

At home, the Madrid club must imperatively keep the goals of Thibaut Courtois inviolate against the attacks led by the Reds, and more particularly Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané.

Real Madrid will however be able to count on the efficiency of captain Karim Benzema to get a head start before the return to Anfield on Wednesday 14 April.
