RB Leipzig has brought to the prelude of the Champions League season an away win at the Portuguese champions. Thanks to two goals by Timo Werner (69th and 78th minute) won the Bundesliga leaders 2-1 (0-0) against Benfica. Haris Seferovic (84.) met for the hosts. Due to this success, Leipzig are now Group G leaders, with Olympique Lyon and Zenit St. Petersburg having split 1-1 (0: 1) in the early evening.

Leipzig's Emil Forsberg scored for the goal already in the seventh minute, but was then whistled back by the referee: Werner had been previously offside when passing Yussuf Poulsen. Then it was a game at eye level, where it was rarely dangerous. Just before half-time, the hosts had their best chance when Raúl de Tomás headed for a free-kick on the far post. Peter Gulácsi prevented a Leipzig deficit (45 + 3).

On the other hand, after Poulsen's cross pass, Marcel Sabitzer would have just had to push the ball across the line, but Vlachodimos was still in between (49 '). Peter Gulácsi had to intervene in a shot from Pizzi from 14 meters again after Poulsen had lost the ball in his own half (62.).

A little later, the Dane made the first goal of the game before: A pass from Nordi Mukiele put Poulsen for Werner, who shot the ball with a right-foot shot in the bottom left corner (69th). Benfica almost equalized directly, but Gulácsi parried Franco Cervis Schuss (72 '). After noteworthy preliminary work by Forsberg and Sabitzer Werner put his second goal after (78.), before the substitute Haris Seferovic with his hit once again caused tension (84.).
