Charlène and Albert's marriage has been bad for years.

If you take a look at the story of the Grimaldis, you will discover parallels to a similarly tragic case.

Monaco – Charlène of Monaco (43) has still not returned to her family in the Prince's Palace, but is still being treated in a facility in Switzerland.

According to the latest official information, her recovery "could be months away".

The marriage between the Princess and her husband Albert II (63) is still the focus of numerous speculations.

Parallels to a namesake and ancestor of the regent emerge.

Charlene and Albert of Monaco: is a historical marriage drama repeating itself?

Numerous Monegasques, royal fans and palace insiders are certain: the relationship between Charlène and Albert only exists on paper.

For years, the princess is said to have been deeply dissatisfied at the side of the regent, the couple is said to have already spent their honeymoon in separate hotels.

There is even talk of the so-called "curse of Monaco", according to which, according to an old legend, the two are supposedly doomed to misfortune.

A look at the history of the Grimaldis further fuels the speculation.

Ironically, the relationship life of the prince's namesake, Albert I of Monaco (73, † 1922), shows some parallels to the current situation.

Charlène and Albert of Monaco: Unhappy and Estranged?

Albert I, who ascended the throne in 1889, walked in front of the altar in the same year with the much younger Alice Heine (67, † 1925).

Before he and the American said yes, they had been in a relationship for a number of years and initially seemed deeply in love with each other – similar to Albert II and Charlène at the beginning of their relationship.

However, Alice is said to have found it difficult to settle in at court.

According to Tatler magazine, consolation was sought in London's high society.

She had little connection with her husband, there were hardly any common interests.

Charlène is also said to have never really settled into the princely palace and felt life there as in a golden cage.

She also seemed more and more thoughtful and melancholic over time.

From 1902 Albert I and his wife finally went their separate ways and no longer appeared together.

Alice moved to London.

However, the two remained married.

The current Princess has not been seen at official appearances alongside the Regent for around a year.

After her return from South Africa, Charlène went straight to Switzerland.

Could history be repeating itself here?
