Her name was Inès, she was 18 years old and she died of a bullet received in the neck.

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, a chase between the police and a driver who had refused a check turned tragic in Grenoble.

The 30-year-old suspect, injured in the exchange of fire with the police, was indicted and imprisoned on Thursday, we learned from the prosecution.

“At the end of his police custody, the man arrested on October 5 was indicted today at the hospital by an investigating judge from Grenoble”, announced the deputy prosecutor Boris Duffau in a press release.

Around 2:30 a.m. on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, police officers patrolling Saint-Martin-d'Hères, in the Grenoble suburbs, decide to check the driver of a white Megane, who has just committed a traffic violation.

But the driver does not comply, and flees at high speed.

Chased by the police vehicle, he allegedly fired three times at the police.

The man, of Moroccan nationality, was arrested the same night.

The 30-year-old escaped with injuries, but his passenger, an 18-year-old young woman, was killed in the exchange of fire.

This suspect, who made use of his right to silence while in police custody, was indicted in particular for "attempted murder of persons holding public authority", "aggravated refusal to comply", "detention of 'category B weapon' and 'driving under the influence of alcohol and narcotics'.

His state of health was considered compatible with detention on Thursday evening, said Boris Duffau.

Earlier Thursday, the prosecution recalled that the custody of three police officers involved in the shooting had been lifted Wednesday evening without prosecution at this stage.

IGPN survey

The IGPN investigation into the police shootings is being continued "in flagrance" and a ballistics expertise will be carried out to determine which weapon killed the young passenger, added the deputy prosecutor.

The autopsy carried out established that the victim had been "fatally hit by a single shot in the neck".

According to a police source, the shooter has already been sentenced in 2012 to eight years in prison for shooting at police officers near Avignon while he was wanted for robbery.

He was also known at that time for drug trafficking, theft, concealment and weapons offences.

Released from prison in 2020, he is subject to several prosecutions and an obligation to leave French territory.

Grenoble, a city in which certain districts are prey to a lucrative drug trade, has been the scene since the end of June of a dozen shootings, sometimes involving the police.

According to the DDSP, the number of cases linked to this trafficking and handled by the police alongside the prosecution has multiplied by 2.5 since 2021.
