It's a dry year.

And Geretsried is under pressure to grow.

What does this mean for the water supply.

Geretsried – The summer was extremely dry.

Concerns about the water supply were raised in some places.

The city of Geretsried gave some savings tips on the social network Facebook with a view to the low level of the groundwater level.

At the city council meeting on Tuesday, Volker Reeh (Geretsrieder Liste) wanted to know whether the Geretsried water pipes will eventually run empty, also in view of the increasing number of inhabitants.

Jan Dühring, head of Stadtwerke, answered all his questions.

Geretsried is growing – is there enough water for everyone?

The public utilities supply Geretsried and the neighboring municipality of Königsdorf with water from the wells in the Wiesen district.

According to the subsidy notice, Geretsried may withdraw 1.85 million cubic meters of water per year from the protected area for its population.

Currently, around 26,000 inhabitants pump 1.6 million cubic meters of water per year.

770 additional apartments are now being built on Banater Strasse, and the city is also under pressure to grow.

“We are at the end of our funding opportunities,” warned Reeh.

"What is the municipal company doing to increase the production volume?"

Dühring described the funding decision as a “glass ceiling”, but also admitted that it took ten years to get it at the time.

"So many issues are affected." In the short to medium term, the water would be sufficient, explained Dühring.

The new “Opus G” quarter on the former Lorenz site is also taken care of.

The production of the water connections is one of the current construction projects of the public utility company.

The costs would be borne by the investor.

"Commissioning can probably take place next week."

According to forecasts, 36,000 people will live in Geretsried by 2026.

According to Dühring, the water requirement for humans can be calculated quite easily.

"Commercial development, on the other hand, is more unpredictable." The city could face problems with water and wastewater-intensive companies once certain dimensions have been reached.

"Especially here we have to see how it develops."

The Stadtwerke conduct various tests in order to be able to cover the increasing water demand due to growth.

This includes checking whether there are still reserves in the existing water protection area, how secure the supply is and where else water could come from.

"We have already tackled this and report continuously to the Board of Directors."

The public utilities are also increasing their scope somewhat by detecting and repairing leaks in the pipe network.

"The water losses have improved compared to ten years ago."

Water in Geretsried: What are the water levels in this dry year?

Before the ultrafiltration system went into operation in Königsdorf in 2017, there was cloudiness when the water levels were low, Reeh recalled.

An extremely dry summer has now come to an end.

"What about the water levels?" the city council wanted to know.

In general, there has been a decreasing trend in recent years, reported Dühring.

The groundwater has leveled off again at this level due to the current weather conditions.

In the summer, the water levels were tense, but similar to 2018, the last major dry year to date.

"2022 was a dry year, but no cause for alarm."

Population growth: are the people of Geretsried digging up the water for the people of Königsdorf?

With a large and growing neighboring city, it can be scary.

So some people in Königsdorf are probably wondering whether the Geretsrieders are taking their water away from them, at least Reeh reported corresponding allegations.

Dühring can relieve them of this concern, since the municipal works serve both Geretsried and Königsdorf.

For both municipalities, the withdrawal is limited by the corresponding quotas.

"There is no competition."

Are Geretsried companies working on reducing their dirty water?

A particularly large amount of dirty water is produced in the commercial sector.

Reeh wanted to know whether the city is in dialogue with companies to reduce or improve their dirty water.

Five years ago, a surcharge for heavy polluters was gradually introduced, Dühring recalled.

For the first time this year, this has had a full impact.

Sometimes there is talk of several 100,000 euros.

"This is an incentive to reduce," said the Stadtwerke boss.

Investments are also worth considering from a business perspective.

Would a service water system help in Geretsried?

The municipal utility supplies a company with process water, i.e. water that cannot be used as drinking water but is suitable for technical processes, for example.

It comes from fountains on the Isardamm, which date back to the times of the armaments factories.

Wolfgang Werner (SPD) recalled that twelve years ago the idea of connecting the ice stadium to the service water was already in the air.

"Can we pick that up again?" he asked.

According to Dühring, that would be technically possible, but it would have to be checked whether it would be financially worthwhile.

"That's why a reconnection was refrained from at the time." The same applies in other areas.

Elmar Immertreu (Geretsrieder Liste) suggested pursuing the topic of service water and connecting the cemetery, for example.

However, quotas have to be observed here too, and the water rights notice is valid “for a few more years”, says Dühring.

A decision must be made on a case-by-case basis as to whether it makes sense to set up a parallel service water network.

"I daresay it won't be economical." In the long run it would probably be better to increase the quotas for drinking water.

But "that's a steep thesis".
