- Over and over again June (11) practices the handstand in the ring, first alone, then on the arm of her dad Enrico.

But it ends shortly before 3 p.m. because today is Wednesday.

And Sigrid Schlowak always comes on Wednesdays.

She is one of six “circus teachers” in Upper Bavaria.

June and Enrico belong to the small family circus Diabolo, which had a forced break on a meadow in Unterschleißheim for over a year. "That was good for the schoolchildren, they were able to go to the same school for many weeks and months, even though the Corona was too busy for a long time," says Schlowak (51). Otherwise, the children are usually in a different school every week, a "base school", where headmasters and teachers take care of the travelers' children - by no means only circus children, also those of showmen, traders, scissors grinders or inland waterwaymen. The "regular school" is located in the family's winter residence. "We were on a Bavarian tour, then wanted to go home to Aurich in Frisia, but then we were no longer allowed to travel because of the pandemic and were stuck in Unterschleißheim," reports Messer thrower.Fire eater and spitter, juggler and chair artist Enrico.

"Regular school" and "base school"

During the times when the circuses are allowed to travel, Sigrid Schlowak, among others, is responsible for the school children in Upper Bavaria. Since the school year 1996, the care of traveling children has been regulated in the Free State. The objective is to improve the continuity of school support during the travel time. This is to be achieved through the structural models “main school” and “base school” as well as keeping a “school diary” in which each day of instruction and, above all, the level of knowledge in each subject is noted. "The regular school provides the learning materials and the school diary, issues the certificates and decides on the advance," reports Schlowak. "The class teacher at the regular school keeps in touch with the parents even during the travel time, gives them information about the child's level of knowledge and about possible support measures. ”The support school is always close to the fairground, it should be geared towards looking after traveling children.

Schlowak is a trained primary and secondary school teacher. Your school has been in Lerchenau for almost 20 years. "Some time ago, the position as a departmental teacher, as it is officially called, was advertised, I applied and have now been responsible for around 20 children traveling in Upper Bavaria for 15 months," reports Schlowak. In concrete terms, this means that she is at school for four hours a week and takes care of circus children for 21 hours. With every child she is two hours a week if possible, with June and the Circus Diabolo always on Wednesday. “It needs to be well organized when the circus moves on, but it works out pretty well.” Schlowak and June go through what was at school last week, look at the exercise books and discuss homework. "After that we always play memory,Cards or dice to promote concentration, ”says the teacher. And what does acrobat June prefer to do? “German, art and, of course, sports are my favorite subjects.” Maths, on the other hand, doesn't suit her.

Today it is important for traveling parents that their children have a decent school leaving certificate, explains Schlowak: “It's often not that easy, but there are more and more people who achieve their qualification or secondary school leaving certificate.” The digital platform “DigLu ".

This enables the teachers to keep in touch with all children across borders.

After a pilot phase, it should be available to all parents and schools.

"School is difficult for many children and especially for those who are different every week," says Schlowak.

"So they also need more support."
