Climate: committed youth want to re-mobilize their troops

2020-09-24T16:35:49.222Z

Friday and Saturday, the young activists of "Fridays for future" hope to revive the movement cut off in its tracks by the health crisis.

The global health crisis put a stop to their movement.

But the young activists committed to the defense of the environment Fridays for Future (also known as Youth For Climate) hope to rekindle the flame during new mobilizations this Friday and Saturday around the world.

The first strike of its kind was launched in August 2018 by the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, before spreading around the world.

In France, the demonstrations mobilized thousands of students, especially in February and March 2019. Last February, the movement was talked about again when activists invaded and damaged the Paris headquarters of asset manager BlackRock, in the appeal from the Youth for Climate Paris organization.

The action had led to 17 arrests.

For this Friday, more than 3,000 protest actions were recorded on the Fridays for Future website, including about sixty in France where young people are for example called to gather at noon in their schools.

The protests will take place both in the streets and digitally, "however

it is safest,

" Greta Thunberg said recently, as quoted by Reuters.

In the context of Covid-19, no big parade planned, therefore - especially after the latest restrictions announced by the government - but rather a call for symbolic actions or civil disobedience on the themes of "

major unnecessary and imposed projects

" .

Among the examples cited, the development of an "eco-technological" park by the Grand Port maritime de Nantes-Saint-Nazaire on the Carnet site, or the shopping center project on the site of the former Neyrpic factories, near Grenoble.

Actions, planned in particular in Lyon, will also target the safety of Seveso sites, while the first anniversary of the fire at the Lubrizol plant in Rouen takes place on Saturday.

Léna Lazare, student and member of Youth For Climate France, assures us: "

The confinement has not harmed local groups, we had plenty of arrivals on our networks

".

But at the national level, "

the concern is that our march of March 13, 2020 was canceled, and then it was a blur not possible because we did not know how it was going to happen at the level of health measures,

explains- she does

.

So it was very complicated to build the mobilization, but the observation also applies at the international level.

She thus admits that

"the mobilization to come is not clear

", with actions online or in the field, depending on the country

: we have two days of actions but some countries are focusing on actions online, 'others in the field, but very diverse

'.

In France, the idea is therefore not according to her "

to call for mass mobilization, but rather a first date to relaunch our local groups in concrete terms

".

2020 was supposed to be the year of the environment

While waiting for the next date of international mobilization, Youth For Climate France is planning an “

intergenerational

mobilization

on November 17 with other movements.

To be confirmed, given the evolution of the health situation.

As for the return of weekly mobilisations, which encouraged high school and college students to skip classes every Friday?

We realized that it had its limits,”

explains Léna Lazare.

It was very beautiful and symbolic, but now we prefer to engage in local initiatives.

2020 was to be the year of the environment.

But this mobilization takes place while all the major events dedicated to biodiversity and climate (such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, COP15, which was to be held in China, or the COP26 which was to take place in UK) have been postponed until next year at best.

For her part, Greta Thunberg has returned to school, after a sabbatical after leaving college to defend the cause of the climate around the world.

However, she assures that she wants to continue her fight against climate change.
