The wind is up again!

After the Lion Rock, which brought Typhoon Signal No. 8, left, the Severe Tropical Storm Compasses also approached fiercely.

The Observatory issued a strong monsoon signal at 4 o'clock this afternoon (11th). Strong winds are blowing in Hong Kong. The average wind speed exceeds 40 kilometers per hour, and the wind is equivalent to the No. 3 typhoon signal.

Li Zixiang, Senior Science Director of the Observatory, even announced at the press conference in the afternoon that when the compass enters the 800 km range of Hong Kong tonight, the Observatory will directly issue the No. 3 typhoon signal to replace the strong monsoon signal as if the Lion Rock is coming. The wind will increase further. Strong winds may blow in some areas on Wednesday, and the Observatory may issue the No. 8 typhoon that day.

Observatory: When the compass enters the 800km range of Hong Kong tonight, it will change the No. 3 typhoon signal

Li Zixiang said that due to the influence of the northeast monsoon, a strong monsoon signal has been issued. When the compass enters within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong this evening, the observatory will issue the No. 3 typhoon signal instead of the strong monsoon signal.

At 4 pm, the Severe Tropical Storm Compasses gathered about 490 kilometers north-northeast of Manila and is expected to move westward at a speed of about 25 kilometers per hour, crossing the Luzon Strait.

Li pointed out that the observatory expects that the compass will pass about 400 kilometers south of Hong Kong at the beginning of Wednesday.

Strong winds in some areas on Wednesday, heavy rains and strong winds in extensive areas

Li Zixiang mentioned that the wind may reach gale intensity in some areas of Hong Kong, and there may also be heavy rains and squalls in a wide range of areas. The compass-related showers will continue to affect the coast of Guangdong later this week. We remind the public to pay close attention to the latest updates in the next few days. For weather information and weather changes, those planning outdoor activities and grave sweepers also need to draw up backup and contingency plans according to the situation.

The Observatory predicts that the wind will increase further from Tuesday to early Wednesday, reaching gale intensity, and the tropical cyclone warning signal No. 8 may need to be re-issued. However, there are still uncertainties, including that the compasses entering the South China Sea will be affected by the northeast monsoon, and the intensity and circulation will be affected. Whether it will weaken is still unknown.

Director Zheng Chuming: Compasses may be closer to Hong Kong than Lion Rock

The director of the observatory, Zheng Chuming, said that the Lion Rock is an "autumn station" like the compass. South China is affected by the northeast monsoon. When there is a tropical cyclone in the South China Sea, the combined effect of the two will increase the wind force. Compared with a typical tropical cyclone, if not In the northeast monsoon, the wind will not be so strong. For example, Lion Rock is quite far away from Hong Kong. If there is no monsoon, the gale force will not affect Hong Kong. However, the two will collide with each other and the wind will increase. Therefore, it is decided to direct the monsoon signal and change the signal. Typhoon signal No. 3.

As for the impact, Zheng pointed out that the compass may be closer to Hong Kong than the Lion Rock. The Lion Rock is the nearest 500 kilometers, and the circular rule is expected to be 400 kilometers. The Lion Rock is a tropical storm. The compass is already a severe tropical storm, so it is stronger; two winds The location and path are different.
