Has the corona autumn wave already started? The current sharp increase in the number of cases suggests this. Particularly affected: Munich.

The number of officially recorded corona infections has recently increased significantly: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Thursday morning at 409.9.

A week ago there were 281.1 cases per week and 100,000 inhabitants (previous month: 242.5).

According to this information, the incidence has increased by 46 percent within a week.

Whether the increase is already the beginning of a new wave can only be said more precisely in retrospect.

The incidence data currently provide only a very incomplete picture.

On the one hand, because the severity of the diseases and the utilization in the clinics are also important for an assessment of the situation.

On the other hand, the basis for calculating the incidence are PCR tests from the laboratory, which are now being carried out less frequently than in previous phases of the pandemic.

Because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done.

Only these tests count in the statistics.

In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

The number of unreported corona infections is therefore likely to be significantly higher than the officially reported number of cases.

In Munich, the number of cases has recently risen sharply.

For around two weeks, the Oktoberfest has been taking place in the Bavarian capital with thousands of visitors every day.

The incidence there is 695.8, well above the national average.

In the past seven days, more than 10,000 new corona cases have been reported there - around 6,500 more than in Hamburg, where the second most cases were reported in the past week.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is also currently infected with the corona virus.

His test was positive at the beginning of the week, and he is now doing his official business from his home office.

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 78,863 new corona infections (previous week: 56,978) and 94 deaths (previous week: 106) to the RKI within one day.

The RKI has counted 33,216,006 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher.
