RKI registered 76,414 new infections - the incidence was 438.2

6.27 a.m.:

The number of new corona infections transmitted to the Robert Koch Institute within one day has reached a high again. According to the RKI, the health authorities reported 76,414 cases in 24 hours on Friday morning. Exactly one week ago there were 52,970 new infections recorded. The RKI gave the seven-day incidence of 438.2 - also a maximum. For comparison: the previous day the value was 419.7, a week ago it was 340.7 (previous month: 113.0). This is evident from the numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 03:32 a.m.

According to the new information, 357 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were 201 deaths.

The RKI has counted 5,650,170 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not recognized.

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 population within seven days was given by the RKI on Thursday at 5.79 (Wednesday: 5.74).

The value plays an essential role in assessing the occurrence of the infection.

If limit values 3, 6 and 9 are exceeded in the federal states, stricter measures to combat the pandemic can be imposed there.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered on Friday at 4,775,300.

The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 100,476.

WHO: Almost 500,000 lives saved in Europe with Covid-19 vaccinations

6.15 a.m.:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 470,000 people in the age group over 60 have been saved from death in Europe alone since the start of the Covid 19 vaccinations. This is shown by a study in 33 European countries published in cooperation with the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in the magazine "Eurosurveillance", the WHO European office in Copenhagen announced on Thursday. This estimate does not include the cases that were saved by vaccinating people under 60 years of age.

WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge said the vaccines against Covid-19 are a miracle of modern science. This study makes it clear that they had exactly the promised effect, "namely saving lives and offering a very high level of protection against serious illness and death." In some countries, the death toll would have been twice as high without the vaccines. It is therefore crucial that all Member States achieve high vaccination coverage in the risk groups as soon as possible. Countries with lower vaccination rates should continue to give priority to the most vulnerable and protect vulnerable groups as soon as possible.

As of December 2019, countries in the WHO European Region have reportedly reported over 1.5 million confirmed deaths from Covid-19, of which 90.2 percent were in the age group over 60.

Montgomery: "We are all preparing for a triage"

5.40 a.m.:

The situation in the hospitals is worsening dramatically in view of the rapidly increasing number of people infected with corona.

The chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, sounded the alarm: "We are all preparing for a triage," said Montgomery to the newspapers of the Funke media group (Friday).

The doctors did everything they could to avert this last dire decision.

"But with the number of infections rising, the clinics need to prepare," said Montgomery.

Triage means that medical professionals must decide who to help first due to scarce resources.

This Friday, the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) wants to express itself at an online press conference on prioritization and triage for Covid-19.

New super version in southern Africa

2.35 a.m.:

The spread of a new, potentially very dangerous variant of the coronavirus in southern Africa has sparked international concern.

Experts fear that variant B.1.1.529 is not only highly contagious due to an unusually large number of mutations, but could also penetrate the protective shield of the vaccines more easily.

Great Britain and Israel therefore restricted air traffic to the states in the region as a precaution.

The South African Institute for Infectious Diseases NICD announced on Thursday that the first 22 cases of the new variant B.1.1.529 had been detected in South Africa. More cases are to be expected in the course of the ongoing genome analyzes. "Although the data situation is still limited, our experts are working overtime with all monitoring systems in order to understand the new variant and the possible implications associated with it."

Health Secretary Joe Phaahla said the new variant confirms the "fact that this invisible enemy is very unpredictable."

He called on the South Africans to wear masks, to keep their distance and, in particular, to get vaccinated.

"We also have the extra vehicle of vaccination, which will help us avoid serious illnesses including ending up in the clinic or even falling victim to the virus," he said.
