For the first time since spring I spoke to several people about the subject of "toilet paper".Icon: enlarge Photo:  Illustration: Mario Wagner / Der Spiegel First of all, my wife said on the phone: "Lidl ran out of toilet paper today. First of all, my wife said on the phone: "Lidl ran out of toilet paper today. It's going again!"

I found that depressing and quickly went to the organic supermarket because I thought: The expensive organic stuff will be the last to go.

But the shelf was empty.

What was left were kitchen rolls.

For a moment I thought about buying kitchen rolls instead of toilet paper.

One thing is very important in times of crisis: openness.

And the ability to improvise.

I asked an organic supermarket employee about toilet paper.

He said: "Something's coming in tomorrow. Don't worry!"

That reminded me of the political protests of the past few days.

There is no reason to buy hamsters, said Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner.

"The supply chains are working."

In the "Bild" newspaper I read the headline: "Government gives Germans toilet paper guarantee!"

If I had to choose a word of the year, it might be "toilet paper guarantee".

Because it tells so much about the German soul and German fears.

"Prohibition of accommodation" and "Ventilation" follow just behind.

Can you imagine other peoples doing "shock ventilation"?
