The Oktoberfest will not take place this year due to the corona pandemic.
This was announced by Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) at a press conference.
As a reason that the decision has now been made, Reiter named the location of the so-called feeders who would now have to conclude the contracts.
Due to the ups and downs of the corona infection situation, a reliable prognosis is not possible, said Reiter.
Söder also spoke of not wanting to damage the reputation of the Oktoberfest.
An Oktoberfest with measures such as spaces and masks inside the famous festival tents is not possible, he said.
Six million visitors in previous years
The Wiesn 2021 should take place from September 18th to October 3rd.
Around six million visitors from all over the world came to the world's largest folk festival in previous years.
The Oktoberfest was canceled as early as 2020.
Söder said that the other large folk festivals in Bavaria should not take place either.
This is recommended to the municipalities.
Both politicians had recently expressed skepticism about whether the Oktoberfest could take place in view of the Corona situation.
The Oktoberfest is not just a Bavarian festival, but a global event, Söder said.
The renewed rejection not only affects landlords, showmen and stallholders at the festival itself, but also hotels, restaurants, taxi drivers and retailers.
According to the city, the Wiesn had an economic value of around 1.23 billion euros in 2019.
