Half of the federal states are now below the politically relevant incidence threshold of 100 in the corona pandemic. This comes from figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) from Sunday morning.
Accordingly, things looked particularly good in Schleswig-Holstein with 50.0 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week. In Hamburg (76.1), Lower Saxony (83.4), Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (88.2) and Brandenburg (89.1) the values are well below the hundred mark. It is a little closer in Rhineland-Palatinate (96.7), Bremen (99.2) and Berlin (99.6). Saxony (172.8) and Thuringia (180.0) bring up the rear.
As a national average, the RKI gave the seven-day incidence on Sunday at 118.6.
The value has been falling fairly continuously for about two weeks.
Other key figures such as the occupancy of the intensive care beds with corona patients and the R value and indicate relaxation.
The R value indicates how many people an infected person infects on average.
If the infection rate is above 1, the disease spreads exponentially, if it is lower, the number of new infections decreases.
The incidence values are the basis for decisions about tightening and relaxing corona measures.
However, the calculation is not uniformly regulated nationwide (you can read more about the different types of calculation - including SPIEGEL - here).
The development of the incidence values can be due to the behavior of the people, but also to the progress in vaccination.
Effects of the federal emergency brake are also conceivable.
It takes effect when the incidence at the district level is over 100 for three consecutive days.
Then stricter rules such as exit restrictions automatically apply.
Since the decline in the number of infections is also noticeable at the district level, there should be easing in some regions.
According to the RKI, the incidence in 170 of 412 counted districts and urban districts is below 100. If the value remains below this mark for five days in a row, the rules of the federal emergency brake will expire two days later.
