The head of the German Institute for Economic Research has sharply criticized the federal government's corona policy.

The decisions of the Prime Minister's Conference are "an admission of failure," writes the well-known economist in a statement.

The federal and state governments have decided on a course of easing, although the number of infected people is high and is increasing again.

There is a lack of convincing measures to prevent a third wave of infections, according to Fratzscher.

"Many political announcements - from widely available, free tests to better tracking of infection chains to more available vaccines - have so far proven to be empty promises," complains the economist.

"And there is too little evidence that these plans will soon be implemented." The federal and state governments are therefore "largely unprepared for the consequences of their own, now decided steps."

According to Fratzscher, the easing will cause "significant damage to health and also to the economy."

A strong third wave of infections is becoming more likely, which could lead to a “yo-yo effect with renewed restrictions”.

The turnaround in politics in its Corona strategy is "symptomatic of its hesitation and disagreement," continues the economist.

The government's strategy has lost acceptance among the population.

"However, the change in direction will not be able to stop this loss of acceptance, but will accelerate it."
