No fireworks on the street in London even on the occasion of the next New Year, for reasons of residual caution related to the Covid emergency.

This was announced by the mayor of the British capital, Sadiq Khan, canceling the initiative for the second year in a row.

The show, which traditionally takes place along the Thames and attracts crowds of spectators and onlookers, will skip despite the general reopening of all activities and the substantial end of any restrictions enacted in the UK by mid-July.

"Due to uncertainties about the pandemic, our world famous New Year's Eve show will not take place on the banks of the Thames this year," the mayor's office said today.

However, "other options" are being studied to publicly celebrate the advent of 2022 in London "in a spectacular way", the Municipality pointed out.

Options that, according to the Sun tabloid, include plans for a live music concert in Trafalgar Square between midnight and 1am, which should be open to a limited number of spectators to no more than 10,000.
