(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 15 - Taiwan has registered a surge in Covid-19 infections, which have risen to 180 new cases, the worst number ever recorded by the island in almost a year and a half of pandemic.

In efforts to contain the worst and unexpected wave of infections, authorities raised the alert level to 3, to a maximum scale of 4, in both Taipei and neighboring New Taipei County, limiting family gatherings and ordering the closure of numerous industries. . Taiwan has been one of the world's success stories of pandemic containment and the number of its cases remains low compared to still active focuses around the world. However, today's infections, which bring the total to 1,470 out of a population of 24 million, represent a clear alarm signal. Of the 180 cases today, 132 seem to be without a known source: press conference, Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang and government ministers announced the squeeze on Taipei and New Taipei, very close to total blockadewhich will remain in effect from today until May 28. Among the obligations to be respected, in particular, there are those of the use of the mask in public, of the limits for outdoor meetings for 10 people and for those indoors for five, together with the stop of all activities except essential services, from governmental ones and health, up to the police.
