The current capacity of the resuscitation services - which do not only welcome Covid patients - is around 5,800 beds.
This means that half of the beds currently available in France in these services are now occupied by severe cases of coronavirus.
Finally, the number of hospital deaths attributable to the disease rose to 288 for the day of Tuesday, for a total death toll of more than 35,000 since the start of the epidemic.
235 deaths are also to be deplored in nursing homes and social medical establishments, bringing the total of deaths announced this Tuesday to 523, the highest total since April, in the heart of the first wave.
New measures expected
The overall number of hospitalizations for Covid also continues to increase.
Nearly 19,000 Covid-19 patients (18,955) were in hospital on Tuesday, against 17,761 the day before.
In addition, the number of confirmed positive cases has increased by more than 33,000 in 24 hours, according to figures published on the official government website.
On Sunday, France broke a new record with more than 52,000 positive cases confirmed in 24 hours.
Faced with the very strong degradation of all indicators of the epidemic, Emmanuel Macron will make a televised address on Wednesday at 8 p.m. to present new measures.
These new restrictions, which could go as far as a national reconfinement, will be decided on Wednesday morning during a Defense Council before the Council of Ministers.
