Covid-19: prolonged confinement in New Caledonia after the death of 7 people in 24 hours

The President of the Government Louis Mapou and the High Commissioner of the Republic announced the extension of the confinement which entered into force since September 6.

The inhabitants of the archipelago will have to respect it until October 4 as well as the curfew measures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The epidemic caused the death on Thursday of seven deaths from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.

This is the heaviest daily toll since the discovery of the first indigenous cases of the disease on September 6.

 Fourteen families are already struggling in a week.

Most of these missing were over 50 years old and unvaccinated and presented with co-morbidities.

“The youngest of them was 48 years old.

This shows that no one is immune to the virus in Caledonia, ”explained Louis Mapou.

It brings the total number of people who have died since that date to 24, according to the authorities.

“We must not relax our efforts, (…) to gradually recover a social life that would allow Caledonia to relaunch itself from October 4.

This fight is the fight for life.

It requires a lot of sacrifice, ”said Louis Mapou.

A health pass for October?

Currently, 44.7% of Caledonians have received a first dose of vaccine, 29% have a complete vaccination schedule.

The objective for the next few weeks: 5,000 injections per day to achieve a sufficient vaccination rate on October 4.

In addition, according to 1ère, the authorities are considering setting up a health pass in early October.

At the end of this speech, High Commissioner Patrice Faure indicated that he had banned the demonstration planned for Monday by the Réinfo Covid NC collective, opposed to the vaccination obligation that entered into force in the territory.

Due in particular to the "risk of spreading the virus", the representative of the State "refuses to take the risk of endangering the population".

Patrice Faure also stressed that "given the violence of comments observed on social networks", this ban also aims to "avoid excesses that could endanger the organizers, participants or passers-by".
