Covid-19 in France: 50 new deaths and 1,740 people in critical care

The pressure continued to decrease this Friday in hospitals, which have just over 10,000 hospitalized Covid-19 patients, according to

The number of daily deaths linked to Covid-19 in France has been declining since the beginning of May.

Health authorities have identified 50 people who have died of the disease in the past 24 hours.

While 2,150 deaths were recorded daily on average in January, then 2,040 in February and just under 1,900 in March and April, that number fell to 1,740 deaths per day on average during the first half of May, then to a just over 1,600 over the period from May 16 to June 7, said INSEE on Friday in its weekly death toll during the Covid-19 epidemic.

From January 1 to June 7, 301,263 deaths were recorded in France, or 8% more than for the same period of 2019, a year without Covid but with a virulent seasonal flu. The figure is almost stable (+ 1%) compared to 2020, the year of the outbreak of the pandemic.

If we compare the deaths of 2021 to those of two years ago, we see that their number increases only for the age groups of 65 years and over: + 13% for the 65-74 years as for the 75-84 years old.

For those over 85, the excess of deaths compared to 2019 only reached 7% from January 1 to June 7, and is even almost stable (+1%) if we only take into account the last month for which figures are available (May 7 to June 7).

This can be explained by the effect of vaccination against the Covid, but also by those of the seasonal flu in 2019 and the Covid in 2020: "epidemics affect the weakest people and sometimes anticipate their deaths, so that 'then mortality drops,' notes the statistical institute.

53 new critical care admissions

The pressure on hospital services also continues to drop, with 1,740 Covid-19 patients in critical care services - the most serious forms - this Friday, according to figures from Public Health France.

They were 1799 on Thursday.

Never has such a low level been reached since last October.

And 53 patients suffering from a severe form of the disease have been treated in critical care units in the past 24 hours.

As an indication, they were 46 the day before, and 66 seven days ago.

France now has 10,738 people hospitalized due to Covid-19, compared to 11,114 on Thursday.

Only 171 people have been admitted there in the past 24 hours.
