CUHK today (23rd) held the first "CUHK Innovation Day", exhibiting 20 outstanding research projects in recent years, including smart magnetic permeable endoscopes, minimally invasive surgical incision reduction, and satellite remote sensing data to predict the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Innovative and technological projects such as building settlement risks.

The CUHK campus will also add an Innovation Museum, a 4-storey building that provides a shared working space, and provides space for CUHK’s start-up companies and social enterprises to consolidate innovation and technology exchanges.

CUHK Innovation Day exhibited 20 innovation projects of the school. Among them, Professor Li Zheng of the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine improved the design of the endoscope and produced a new type of magnetic permeability endoscope.

The new design uses a magnetic lens. During the operation, a lens with a diameter of 1 cm and a length of about 4 cm is placed in the patient's body and "sticked" to the chest wall with magnetic force. The current lung surgery requiring two incisions can be reduced to one.

The lens is equipped with lighting and self-cleaning functions.

Li Zheng pointed out that patients with pacemakers may not be able to use a magnetic-permeable endoscope, and some surgical tools are magnetic and must be used at a distance of 3 cm from the lens.

The technology is expected to be officially used in 3 years. It will temporarily be used for lung surgery, but it is also expected to develop into abdominal surgery in the future.

Technology can also assist in site engineering. Guan Meibao's team, director of the Institute of Space and Geo-Information Science at CUHK, is studying the use of radar satellite signals to monitor the settlement of buildings near the site.

She said that the accuracy of monitoring settlement can be up to 3 millimeters, and the site area covered by the monitoring can be quite extensive. In addition to the artificial island of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, which is more than one kilometer long, can also be monitored.

She also pointed out that this method does not require the installation of sensors throughout the site, and that it is also applicable to settlement monitoring such as the Shah-Zhongshan Middle Route Project.

Newly-developed robots work at heights on behalf of workers

Liu Daming, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at CUHK, also collaborated with engineering companies to invent robots that can be used to work at heights.

In the future, engineers can use robotic arms to wipe windows, whitewash the exterior walls of high-rise buildings, and even check the quality of concrete, reducing the risk of workers working at heights.

Liu Zhi, the next six months will be the first to test buildings on the campus of CUHK.

CUHK Innovation Museum opens today to provide shared workspaces

Yang Shuying, deputy director of the Research and Knowledge Transfer Service Office of CUHK, said that the newly opened Innovation Museum is expected to provide a shared workspace for CUHK’s start-ups and social enterprises, and encourage and support teachers and students to use their innovation and technology research to develop start-ups. application.

He pointed out that CUHK has an average of 7 start-ups, 3 social enterprises, and 18 student project teams each year. He believes that there can be more interactions with the society, and the four-story innovation museum can gather start-ups and increase exchanges.

CUHK President Tuan Chongzhi pointed out that the Innovation Day and the opening of the Innovation Museum will showcase CUHK’s research projects in various fields, ranging from green environmental protection, Chinese language learning, and medicine. Neighbors can increase communication with other people on innovation and technology.

The Director of the Bureau of Innovation and Technology Xue Yongheng was invited to attend the opening ceremony as the officiating guest.
