The Danish federation has confirmed that Jonas Vingegaard will not play the Worlds in Australia next month, according to a choice of his

The winner of the Tour de France 2022, Jonas Vingegaard, will not participate in the Road World Championships in Australia, the Danish cycling federation announced on Tuesday.

"Jonas Vingegaard will not be part of the World Championship team as he has chosen to focus on other activities within Jumbo-Visma," coach Anders Lund said in a statement.

He can all the more harbor regrets as the rugged profile of the course could have suited the qualities of the one who shone so much during the Tour de France.

Asked by TV2 television, he expressed his disappointment.

“I would have liked Vingegaard to be part of the group of riders who want to participate in the World Championships,” he said.

The 25-year-old climber, the second Dane to win the Grande Boucle after Bjarne Riis in 1996, did not comment after this announcement.

Neither world championship nor Tour of Denmark

The Jumbo-Visma cyclist is also not taking part in the Tour of Denmark, which started north of Copenhagen on Tuesday.

“It's really a shame.

When you have a Danish winner of the Tour de France, you really want to have him at the start,” competition manager Frank Hyldgaard told local news agency Ritzau.

“We spoke to him and to Jumbo-Visma, but they decided together that it was better to rest, which we fully respect.

It's one thing to be ready physically, but you also have to be ready mentally,” he explained.

Mattias Skjelmose Jensen (Trek), Jakob Fuglsang (ISR), Søren Kragh Andersen (DSM) and Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF) will represent Denmark at the World Championships.

“When I look at the team, I know they will be more than powerful anyway.

So I sleep well at night,” coach Anders Lund told TV2.
