Danna Paola's journey: from 'Sesame Street' to queen of Pride in Mexico

2022-07-02T14:10:12.303Z

The 27-year-old singer has been in front of the cameras for two decades, which have seen her grow up to leave soap operas behind and champion feminism and sexual diversity

The life of Danna Paola Rivera Munguía (Mexico City, 1995) has passed in front of a camera.

If the images were reproduced very quickly, a direct trip to fame would be seen, with stops in soap operas and successful series, but also in attempts at sexual abuse, therapy and insecurity.

This week she has become the unexpected protagonist of Pride, the celebration of the LGTB + collective, in the country's capital.

Climbing on one of the floats, the Mexican child star resurfaced between the flags of feminism and sexual diversity.

Dressed in a glittery minisuit and platform boots, Danna Paola became the most applauded celebrity in Mexico City on Saturday.

More than 250,000 people came to Paseo de la Reforma to celebrate and defend LGBT rights.

In a country where there are still places where the words gay, lesbian or trans are unpronounceable, the presence of the actress, one of the most famous people in Mexico, on one of the floats was a turning point for the attendees.

The singer danced reggaeton, sang

Agüita

—One of her oldest and most famous lyrics— and even kissed a young man.

Danna Paola is not part of the group, but she was invited on the Tik Tok float for her commitment to LGBT rights.

Her defenders explain that she supports the song

TQ Y YA

, which she released in 2021 where she sings with the color of the rainbow: “Give me your hand on the sidewalk and whoever sees us does not put labels, that on the street , we are respected.

Love is love and that nobody gets involved”.

That letter is part of her album

KO

of her, the work of which she feels most proud so far and that she composed after voluntarily leaving

Elite

, the series of adolescents that catapulted her to fame in Spain, to bet on music her.

The album includes songs like

Me, Myself,

composed after a brand of hair products with whom she had recorded a commercial called her “fat”, or

Calla Tú.

The latter was written after attending her first feminist march, on March 8, 2018 in Madrid.

In an interview with EL PAÍS she acknowledged that this demonstration made her "click" to try to contribute her grain of sand to feminism through her music, as "a way to give a voice to many women."

Danna Paola acknowledges that she has suffered from machismo inside and outside the industry: "In certain relationships in my life there was a lot of psychological damage and a lot of devaluation of my person."

In the video clip of that song, the singer is fed up with the phrase that she has heard the most as an artist: “Shut up, you look prettier”, and wearing a bodysuit with the insults “easy, bitch, hysterical, bitch”, she sings: “ Today I won't shut up, shut up."

To get to that work there are many years of growth and deconstruction of the young woman.

Daughter of a singer father and a mother who has always worked in the world of acting, at the age of four she participated in

Plaza Sésamo

and at six she starred in her first telenovela,

María Belén

, and released her first album.

Her childhood was not ordinary.

She suffered

bullying

from her classmates, changed schools four times and ended up completing her training with private teachers, but Danna Paola does not shy away from her childhood stardom and would not change anything about her past.

“I have learned the

hard way

(Understand, to blows) but that means that I have not lived in my candy world, but that I have had to build the castle alone, and it makes me feel very proud, "he explained.

The artist believes that her new image can surprise in Mexico where they still see “a little Danna, from soap operas, super innocent, the good girl.

And that's why it was very important for me to make that transition."

Along the way she was about to leave everything and go to study gastronomy in France, she was drugged in Madrid by a group of boys who tried to abuse her and she began to go to therapy.

Today, with more than 34 million followers on Instagram — she is the most popular Mexican — she has launched a clothing line, has been the face of L'Oreal or Puma, and has provided voice and music for Disney movies.

Her latest success: being crowned queen of

Pride

.
