Death of Elizabeth II: the Queen's funeral program

After a religious ceremony in Westminster from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. (Paris time), the coffin will be buried in the afternoon at Windsor Castle, in the presence of members of the royal family.


A grand funeral will take place this Monday in London.

Dignitaries from around the world are expected to pay tribute to Sovereign Elizabeth II.

The protocol is timed, for this first national funeral since that of Winston Churchill in 1965.

On Sunday evening, Charles III held a reception at Buckingham for foreign dignitaries.

A minute of silence is held across the country at 8 p.m. in memory of Elizabeth II.

  • 7:30 a.m.: end of the public exhibition

After 5 days of exhibition at Westminster Hall, the doors of the room where the queen rested were closed to the public this Monday at 7:30 a.m. (6:30 a.m. in London).

Those of Westminster Abbey, a few dozen meters away, will open at 9 a.m. to start welcoming guests from all over the world attending the ceremony.

At 11:35 a.m., the coffin will be carried from the catafalque, the imposing platform where it rested, to the gun carriage which will wait outside the north door of Westminster Hall.

Ten minutes later, the Royal Navy gun carriage will set out for a short procession to the Abbey, hauled by 142 sailors.

  • 12 p.m. religious ceremony in Westminster

At 11:52 a.m., the coffin will arrive at the west door of Westminster Abbey, where some 2,000 guests, heads of state and delegations from around the world will be waiting.

US President Joe Biden, Japanese Emperor Naruhito, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are expected.

Followed on foot by the Queen's eldest son and heir, King Charles III, and the other members of the royal family, the coffin is placed inside the building.

At 12 p.m. the state funeral begins, conducted by the Dean of Westminster, David Hoyle.

The sermon will be delivered by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, spiritual leader of the Anglican Church, of which the British sovereign is the formal head.

At around 12.55pm the bugle will sound, followed by two minutes of silence across the UK.

Then the ceremony will end with the national anthem and a musical lamentation.

  • 1:15 p.m.: procession to Wellington Arch

At the end of the ceremony, the coffin will be fired again from the gun carriage towards Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner, near Buckingham Palace.

It will be followed by the royal family and a procession, to the sound of Big Ben and cannon shots.

Around 2 p.m., arrived at Wellington Arch, the coffin will be placed in the royal hearse to head for Windsor Castle, about forty kilometers west of London, in the county of Berkshire.

  • 5 p.m.: private ceremony in Windsor

The coffin will enter “

the Long Walk

”, an impressive rectilinear path of more than 4 kilometers which leads to Windsor Castle, residence of the royal family.

The King and senior members of the Royal Family will join the procession on foot from the Quadrangle, Windsor Castle's Great Court, before the procession stops at the Chapel at around 4.40pm.

At 5 p.m., the funeral ceremony will begin at St. George's Chapel in the presence of members of the royal family and the 15 prime ministers of the kingdoms who served with the British sovereign as head of state.

800 guests are expected for this 45-minute ceremony.

Then the coffin will descend into the royal crypt.

At 8:30 p.m., a private burial ceremony will be held at the King George VI Memorial at St. George's Chapel.

The Queen will rest alongside her husband Prince Philip.

A marble plaque will indicate, in engraved letters: “

ELIZABETH II, 1926-2022

”.
