Death of Steve Caniço: the former prefect of Loire-Atlantique indicted for manslaughter

Steve Caniço, 24, died following a controversial police evacuation during the Music Festival in 2019.


More than two years after the death of Steve Maia Caniço in full Fête de la Musique, in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), the prefect at the time of the facts, Claude d'Harcourt, was indicted for manslaughter, announces the prosecutor of the Republic of Rennes Thursday evening.

The prefect was to be heard in October by the examining magistrate. This summer, the police commissioner in charge of the security system during the music festival, had also been indicted for intentional homicide, as was a sub-prefect, director of the cabinet of the prefect of Loire-Atlantique at the time of the facts. In the case, several people were placed under the status of assisted witness, such as the mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland, and her deputy in charge of security.

Steve Maia Caniço, 24-year-old extracurricular animator, had disappeared after a police operation intended to put an end to an electro evening on the banks of the Loire during the Fête de la Musique, in June 2021. Seven people had fallen into the river during the intervention night police, according to the General Inspectorate of Administration (IGA), not to mention Steve Maia Caniço, whose body was not found until July 29.
