Former English soccer champions Derby County have to file for bankruptcy.
The club board announced that the appropriate steps were taken for the second division and all subsidiaries.
"This step has become necessary due to a number of developments," said the press release.
It had become clear that despite ongoing negotiations, it would not be possible to find a buyer in the near future.
Point deduction and relegation threaten
The corona pandemic had hit the club hard financially and meant further uncertainties, so that current expenses could no longer be covered.
The club, coached by the 120-time England international Wayne Rooney, called on its fans to continue showing their support.
It is hoped that in the course of the bankruptcy proceedings a solution for the future of the 1972 and 1975 master could be found.
If this is not possible, twelve points may be deducted.
This would put the team in acute danger of relegation.
After the seventh round of the championship, Derby County ranks 16th out of 24 teams with seven points.
Even before this season, the "Rams" had a transfer ban due to the debt situation.
Coach Rooney was only allowed to sign free transfer players under strict conditions.
