The British subsidiary of the German retail giant Lidl has set itself a new expansion target.

Lidl GB announced that there will be 1,100 branches in Great Britain by the end of 2025.

According to the company, this could create up to 4,000 new jobs.

The company, which belongs to the Schwarz retail group, had previously set a target of 1,000 supermarkets by the end of 2023.

This mark will also be reached.

"We continue to see enormous opportunities in the market," said Christian Härtnagel, head of the British subsidiary.

Unlike many other companies, Brexit does not prevent the retail chain from continuing to rely on the British market with its around 67 million consumers.

British suppliers like Tesco and Sainsbury's under pressure

Lidl currently operates around 880 branches in the United Kingdom - 55 of which were opened in the current 2020/21 financial year - and employs around 26,000 people.

The plan thus roughly corresponds to the current rate of expansion.

The chain has a 6.2 percent share of the UK grocery market, but does not sell online.

The retail group opened its first branch in Great Britain in 1994.

The rise of Lidl and German competitor Aldi in Great Britain over the past ten years has noticeably depressed the returns of the traditional main players - market leaders Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Asda.

Most recently, many UK supermarket chains have struggled to stock their shelves due to the lack of thousands of truck drivers to make deliveries.
