Most planes stay on the ground in the corona crisis, trains, however, continue to run - that is why many people in aviation want to switch to rail.

According to a report by "Bild am Sonntag", more and more pilots are aiming for a job as a train driver for Deutsche Bahn.

According to information from the newspaper, Deutsche Bahn has received around 1,500 applications from the aviation industry since the end of 2020.

Around 280 commitments were made, including 55 ex-pilots and 107 former flight attendants.

Numerous airlines had to lay off thousands of employees due to the corona crisis.

The industry has been "almost in lockdown since the beginning of the pandemic," according to the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry.

In contrast, the state railways continue to operate, although the trains are often quite empty.

Mostly hired train attendants and electronics technicians

Most of the recruitment at the railways takes place in train support and in the area of vehicle maintenance (electronics technician).

They also hired lateral entrants for the job of train driver, dispatcher and wagon master, in maintenance, assistance and planning.

"We are happy that, as a provider of opportunities in the crisis, we can offer our new colleagues professional prospects and a secure job," said DB Human Resources Director Martin Seiler about "Bild am Sonntag".

In recent years, the railway had often complained about a shortage of train drivers - the corona crisis apparently at least somewhat defused the situation.
