Two penalty shootouts had to decide on Tuesday evening whether they would make it to the round of 16 of the DFB Cup: SC Freiburg prevailed 5-4 after penalty shootouts against third division VfL Osnabrück (0: 1, 1: 1, 2: 2), and Hamburger SV won at 1. FC Nürnberg 5: 3 after penalties (0: 1, 1: 1, 1: 1). Mainz 05 had previously won 3: 2 (0: 1, 2: 2) in the duel between the Bundesliga team against Arminia Bielefeld in extra time.
When two defensive teams meet, it often doesn't mean a spectacle - not even if there is a clear class difference between them, at least on paper. VfL Osnabrück (fourth in the 3rd division) and SC Freiburg (third in the Bundesliga) showed that, and there were hardly any chances to score. Osnabrück's goalkeeper Philipp Kühn had to misjudge himself for the lead: Vincenzo Grifo shot the ball into the empty goal (33rd). In direct return, Marc Heider missed Osnabrück's greatest chance for a long time (36th).
Osnabrück came into play better and better, but the many high balls were rarely a threat until central defender Lukas Gugganig headed a corner kick to equalize in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Osnabrück then countered the Bundesliga club in extra time: After a run over half the pitch, Sebastian Klaas shot from 20 meters into the left corner (108th), in the last minute the substitute Keven Schlotterbeck equalized (120th). Osnabrück's goalkeeper Kühn saved two penalties in the penalty shoot-out, but Freiburg's Uphoff even saved three - that decided the game.
After an unfortunate start to the season in the league, Arminia Bielefeld did not find her way to success in the DFB Cup either. Things got off to such a good start in Mainz for Bielefeld, who were still without a win in the league. When Masaya Okugawa overtook Robin Zentner in the Mainz goal, only two minutes had been played. Under the floodlights of Mainz, Frank Kramer's team performed more defensively, by no means passively, but with luck, because Aarón Martin's free kick hit the outside post shortly after the break.
The fact that Mainz found their way back into the game was due to the high pace and six strong minutes by Jonathan Burkardt. The attacker equalized initially with his head (53rd), he prepared the lead by Karim Onisiwo (59th). And yet Arminia saved themselves in extra time because Fabian Kloß equalized to 2: 2 (89th). In the additional 30 minutes, Marcus Ingvartsen (98th) ensured the FSV progressed with his dream goal from around 20 meters. Already on Saturday (3:30 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de; TV: Sky) the game will be reissued in the Bundesliga.
Hamburger SV only averted elimination from league rivals 1. FC Nürnberg on penalties. The intense initial phase was interrupted for several minutes, Timo Leibold was injured (19th). With Tommy Doyle (36th) and Ludovit Reis (44th), the game-determining HSV scraped past the lead, FCN goalkeeper Carl Klaus parried twice. He was powerless against Jonas David: With his header and first professional goal, the 21-year-old put HSV in the lead (45th).
After the break, it became quiet again in the Nuremberg stadium.
The substitute for Leibold Tom Krauss had injured his head after a collision (52nd).
The club said on Twitter that he was approachable and would be taken to the hospital for further examinations.
Nürnbergs found their way back into the game after a successful offensive action.
Substitute Taylan Duman completed by direct acceptance into the right corner (59th).
In the 90th minute, HSV keeper Heuer Fernandes saved his team in extra time - in the additional 30 minutes there were no more goals, so the penalty shoot-out had to decide.
The first four shooters scored, then the Nuremberg nerves showed: Lino Tempelmann shot over it, Asger Sørensen failed to keeper Fernandes.
HSV met all of their four penalties.
