He is a Bundesliga star and national player.

But he also had difficult phases in his career, as Jonas Hofmann now openly admits.

Munich – Jonas Hofmann is something of a big surprise in the still short era of national coach Hansi Flick.

The 29-year-old in the Borussia Mönchengladbach jersey has shown for years that he is a really good kicker.

But under Flick he played the unfamiliar position of right-back again in focus.

The native of Heidelberg has played ten international matches so far and most recently impressed in the final World Cup qualifiers.

Hofmann should be firmly scheduled for Flick for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The foal star also seems to be doing well privately, as he is apparently in a relationship with

Sky

presenter Laura Winter.

However, things didn't always go so smoothly for Hofmann!

In the

Sky

documentary "My Story", the midfield star admitted that he had mental problems after moving from Borussia Dortmund to Gladbach.

The BVB-Aus occupied him a lot at the time.

"It was a hard time," reveals Hofmann: "I often sat alone on the toilet and cried."

During the winter break of the 2015/16 season, he went from Dortmund to Gladbach because Hofmann was unable to assert himself under the then BVB coach Thomas Tuchel, despite his existing talent.

It had taken a toll on him mentally.

So he helped himself.

"I hired a psychologist," reveals Hofmann on

Sky

: "It's often seen as a sign of weakness, I don't see it that way."

The DFB star continues: "If we have the flu or are injured, we go to the doctor.

If one of the most important building blocks in the body, the brain, is damaged, then what?

That's the wrong approach." In the meantime, he no longer has a psychologist, but he "happily and gratefully accepted this help," as he emphasizes: "I attended the sessions for a few months, but I don't need it anymore today."

He has scored seven goals in 16 Bundesliga games this season.

He recently dropped out after a meniscus operation, but wants to attack again in the new year.

After all, there is a big tournament in November 2022: Hofmann wants to be physically fit at the desert World Cup in Qatar - but above all mentally.

He is currently well on the way to doing that.
