DFB Women's Cup: VfL Wolfsburg beats FC Bayern in the semi

2021-04-04T14:25:34.503Z

Wolfsburg versus FC Bayern, the cup semi-final was the best that German women's football has to offer - and it was a strong game. Especially from Alexandra Popp, for whom the game ended badly.

Full commitment:

In the 24th minute, Lena Oberdorf adjusted her protective mask, which she had to wear after a cheekbone injury.

The 19-year-old in the VfL Wolfsburg jersey had recently reached the duel against Sarah Zadrazil from Munich, but Oberdorf also got the Bayern player's arm in the face.

She handed out and pocketed, Oberdorf shook herself briefly, but then she continued in the DFB Cup semi-finals.

Then Lena Oberdorf and her teammates continued to hunt down the team that is currently about to take on the dominant role in German women's football.

It was a successful hunt.

Result of the game:

VfL Wolfsburg is still to be expected.

The team prevailed 2-0 (2-0) against Munich in the cup semi-finals in their home arena.

It was the first bankruptcy after 26 competitive game victories in a row.

The German championship should go to Bayern this year, but VfL Wolfsburg is now in the cup final.

The opponent on May 30th in Cologne is Eintracht Frankfurt.

Shake it up vigorously:

VfL went into the game with a background, only on Wednesday the team lost 3-0 to Chelsea in the Champions League.

The end in the premier class, it was clear and painful, a class difference.

But the Wolfsburg team didn’t let the knockout blow show them during the week: VfL played dominantly against FC Bayern, quickly combined forward and in the 13th minute, Alexandra Popp already took the lead after a fine attack (initiated by Popp himself).

To be found everywhere

: She ran a lot and lurked almost everywhere, she was playable in the penalty area and took balls from her own half: Alexandra Popp, 29, once started her career as a striker, before the 2011 World Cup, the headline "Bild" newspaper over Popp, then only 19, that she was Germany's greatest »storm hope«.

In the meantime, Popp is an everywhere player, "the defender, midfielder and striker" (so it says on her Wikipedia page) provided security against the Munich women, but also danger, like with their opening goal or another big chance in the 35th. Minute.

But her day ended bitterly (see below).

Hello, FC Bayern?

17 wins in 17 league games, 68 goals scored, conceded only three goals, first place in the Bundesliga, also qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League - the role of the favorite was actually on the side of the Munich women.

But the team of coach Jens Scheuer hardly came to rest, could never really build up the game in a controlled manner, Wolfsburg was poisonous and immediately disturbed the opponent.

You didn't see much of top scorer Lea Schüller and her teammates.

The reward:

How long can they hold out the pressing, one wondered in view of the show of strength of the Wolfsburg women.

The answer: long enough.

And that should be rewarded.

The 2-0 win for Wolfsburg was achieved in the first half by Ewa Pajor (45th + 2).

As with 1-0, Svenja Huth played the pass into the penalty area.

The reaction of the national coach:

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has suggested a realignment of German women's football.

The Bayern boss brought up a new, separate organization for women footballers - out of the DFB, but also not into the DFL, which organizes men's football.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, a guest on ARD during the half-time break, said: "I'm delighted that Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is now also interested in women's football." But is Rummenigge's idea a good one?

The national coach tended to avoid it.

Tenor: You need all partners to advance women's football.

The DFB, the DFL, the economy, the media, politics.

After the break:

It wasn't as intense as in the first half, the Wolfsburg's strength decreased.

In the 72nd minute, Pajor left the field, exhausted and tired, having been out for months due to a knee injury.

VfL defended brilliantly without her until the last minute.

Bitter departures

: A rescue act by Popp in the 83rd minute should end badly.

She had just wanted to shoot the ball out of the penalty area when Amanda Ilestedt hit her with full force in the leg, Popp had to be taken off the pitch injured.

Ilestedt only saw the yellow card for the completely exaggerated action.

In the final minute, Bayern's Boye Sörensen received the red card because of an emergency brake, and that meant that the Munich women’s used day was finally perfect.

Outlook:

Trainer Stephan Lerch has not extended his contract in Wolfsburg, Lena Goeßling will say goodbye to Wolfsburg after ten years. The top performers Ingrid Engen and Fridolina Rölfo also leave. The club is in a state of upheaval, but it doesn't have to worry. With players like Oberdorf, VfL will continue to have a strong selection in the future. And the current season is still running anyway, and can be refined with a possible cup win.
