The International Center for Theoretical Physics "Abdus Salam" - ICTP of Trieste awarded the Dirac 2022 medal to three scientists "for revolutionary and mathematically rigorous contributions to the understanding of the statistical mechanics of classical and quantum physical systems".

I'm Joel Lebowitz, of the Center for Mathematical Sciences Research, Rutgers University, USA;

Elliott Lieb, Princeton University, USA;

and David Ruelle, of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, France.

The three physicists were awarded the medal for important work in statistical mechanics, greatly contributing to deepening and broadening the mathematical understanding of physical systems in many new directions, sometimes different from traditional ones.

Their major contributions include, among others, the study of the physics of non-equilibrium;

the demonstration of the stability of matter;

the analytical solution of two-dimensional models;

fundamental achievements in quantum information theory;

the definition of Gibbs states for infinite systems;

and the analysis of chaos and turbulence.

All three scientists were previously awarded the Boltzmann Medal, an award given to physicists who achieve new achievements in statistical mechanics.

The Dirac Medal is usually awarded to scientists who have followed in Paul Dirac's footsteps in his belief that a rigorous application of mathematical methods is the best approach to understanding physical systems and their properties.

This year's choice reflects this approach: all three have adopted in their careers a solid mathematical approach based on statistical and probabilistic methods to explain the macroscopic behavior of the microscopic world of particles.

Lebowitz, Lieb and Ruelle have made valuable contributions to physics, which have had an impact in statistical mechanics but also in condensed matter physics and quantum physics.
