Protests and sit-ins, the discussion about abortion intensifies 3:30

(CNN Spanish) -

A group of activists for the right to abortion in the Dominican Republic, who had been stationed at dawn on Tuesday in front of the National Congress in order to demand the incorporation into the Penal Code of three grounds for decriminalization, denounced that National Police officers violated his right to protest peacefully.

The agents say, for their part, that they complied with the protocol.

Inmagela Abreu, one of the protesters who recorded the exchange with the police, told CNN that the agents broke open the group's tents with knives.

He further claimed that they were sprayed with a "toxic chemical".

For their part, the Police reported in a press release that the uninstallation of the camp in front of Congress was due to compliance with the protocol established by the coronavirus pandemic.

The institution also said that the group of young people set up the camp on Monday night during curfew hours and without permission from the authorities.

The Police added that they established a dialogue for two hours with the organizers of the demonstration, explaining the reasons why they could not do so.

He said that once the deterrence process was finished they proceeded to uninstall the structure.

Debate on the decriminalization of abortion in the Dominican Republic

The Congress of the Dominican Republic began on Tuesday the debate on the decriminalization of abortion, which until now is prohibited in the country without exceptions and is punishable by jail.

The discussions on abortion are part of the debate over the new Penal Code, a day after the president, Luis Abinader, announced his intention to resolve the controversy through a referendum.

The protesters had been installed in front of the National Palace since March 11.

On Monday they had moved to the National Congress to continue their fight.

On Sunday, at least 12 people, including members of the movement and three members of a team from the television channel Noticias SIN, were poisoned with brownies that were sent anonymously to the activists' camp.

On Tuesday afternoon, the legal team that supports the introduction of the three causes of abortion in the Penal Code formally denounced to the Attorney General the events of Sunday and what happened outside the Congress.

The three grounds for the decriminalization of abortion that are contemplated in the reform under discussion foresee that this intervention may proceed when the pregnancy represents a risk to the life of the woman, is the result of rape or incest or there are fetal malformations incompatible with life.
