The Foreign Ministry of the Dominican Republic said today (Saturday) that the country is considering following in the footsteps of the United States - and moving its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

An announcement was made following a conversation between the Israeli Foreign Minister, Gabi Ashkenazi, and the Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic, Roberto Alberz.

Minister Ashkenazi thanked the Dominican Minister for his many years of friendship between the two countries and congratulated him on this important decision.

During the conversation, the ministers also discussed bilateral relations between the countries with an emphasis on promoting trade and economic relations, as well as recent developments in the Middle East.

The Dominican Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement that "the connection between the Dominican people and the Jewish people began in the 15th century, when the first immigrants from Spain arrived on the island, and continued on the eve of World War II, when the republic opened its gates to thousands of Jewish refugees."
