Occupied Jerusalem - SANA

Dozens of Palestinians were injured and 14 others were arrested today as a result of the Israeli occupation forces' attack on the funeral procession of the body of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh while trying to get it out of the French Hospital in occupied Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Wafa Agency stated that the occupation forces beat the mourners with batons and fired poison gas canisters at them, forcing them to re-enter Abu Aqila's body to the hospital, and dozens of them suffocated.

For its part, the General Union of Arab Journalists condemned in a statement today the brutal attack by the Israeli occupation forces on the funeral procession of the martyr Abu Aqila, calling for the formation of an independent international committee to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation and condemn this heinous criminal act.

Cristian Espinosa, head of the Media Committee at the United Nations General Assembly, the permanent representative of Ecuador, stressed the need to protect journalists and respect the freedom to practice their work without threats, according to the Palestinian Wafa Agency.

In turn, Japan, through Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hikariko Ono, condemned the crime committed by the occupation forces, calling for an immediate and comprehensive investigation and for those responsible to be brought to justice, according to the Palestinian Wafa Agency.

And “Abu Aqila” was martyred last Wednesday morning while covering the Israeli aggression on Jenin camp, where the occupation forces targeted her with a bullet in the head, which drew widespread Palestinian, Arab and international condemnation and calls for an international investigation into this crime.
