Every Italian consumes 245 liters of water a day: up to 30 liters just for brushing their teeth, 50 liters for the shower and over 100 liters for washing the car.

    These are the numbers of

the Italian Society of Environmental Medicine (Sima)

that highlights the need for interventions that allow more efficient water management.

"To solve the drought emergency it is necessary to start from the daily habits of citizens - affirms the president,

Alessandro Miani

- Italy is the country with large water resources but also among the first in the world for water waste:

daily per capita consumption is about 245 liters.

Suffice it to say that the bathroom faucet has an average flow rate of over 10 liters of water per minute.

A dripping tap, then, represents a waste of 4 thousand liters of water per year. "

However, through some simple precautions to be adopted at home, water waste can be reduced by up to 50%.

Here is Sima's guide.

- Prefer a shower to a bath

- Use taps equipped with a jet breaker

- Use high energy efficiency appliances (washing machines, dishwashers, etc.) and operate them only at maximum load

- Do not let the water run while brushing your teeth or face or shaving

- For the toilet, prefer flushing equipped with double dispensing buttons (large and small)

- Pay attention to your water bill: an unexpected increase in consumption could indicate a leak

- Avoid watering the plants on the balcony, the lawn and the garden during the hottest hours.

Use drip irrigation systems and collect rainwater in barrels to use for lawn and plant irrigation

- Do not throw waste (used cooking oils - 1 liter of used oil pollutes 1 million liters of groundwater, expired medicines and cosmetic products) down the sink or toilet.
