The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) reported on Tuesday that in May construction registered a year-on-year drop of 48.6% and that the industrial one fell 26.4 percent in the same period, as a consequence of the quarantine against the coronavirus.

"In May 2020, the synthetic indicator of construction activity (ISAC) shows a drop of 48.6% compared to the same month of 2019. The accumulated figure for the first five months of 2020 of the original series index shows a decrease of 42 , 2% compared to the same period of 2019, "said the official body.

Meanwhile, he noted that "the manufacturing industrial production index (manufacturing IPI) shows a decrease of 26.4% compared to the same month of 2019. The accumulated January-May 2020 shows a decrease of 16.3% compared to the same period of 2019 ".

The numbers are known after the historic collapses in April: that month, construction fell 75.6% and industrial, 33.5 percent.

The paralysis that came with the obligatory social distancing defined the fate of both sectors. Construction had the biggest drop in 27 years and, in the case of the industry, "only a third of the premises were able to operate normally," according to the Indec report in April.

Regarding industrial activity, Indec added that "only 38.6% of the premises (of the 1,700 consulted) were able to operate normally in May, while 50.3% partially operated and 11.1% of the premises did not have productive activity ".

"Within the set of premises that were enabled to operate in May, a group faced difficulties in having the necessary personnel as a result of the isolation. Likewise, in certain cases the plants were enabled to operate totally or partially, but reached a low in May level of production as a consequence of the reduction of the internal demand for the isolation or of the external demand for the sanitary emergency in different external places ", indicated the institute led by Marco Lavagna.

The divisions that registered the greatest falls were "Motor vehicles, bodies, trailers and auto parts", which fell 73.8%, and that related to "transport equipment", which fell 72.6 percent.

Regarding the construction situation, the Indec added that the inputs for the sector "show, in relation to the same month of the previous year, drops of 86.5% in processed concrete; 73.5% in granite and calcareous mosaics; 70 , 6% in plaster; 69.6% in the rest of the supplies (includes taps, seamless steel pipes and glass for construction); 61.1% in asphalt; 39.0% in hollow bricks; 33.7% in round iron and steels for construction, 32.8% in Portland cement ", among others.
