Dutch world number 21 Kiki Bertens retired from the women's singles competitions after losing today to Czech Marketa Vondrosova in the first round of the tennis competitions at the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
According to Sky Sports, Vondrosova beat Bertens in two sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round, in which she will face Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu or American Alison Riske, noting that Bertens will continue to compete in women's doubles and mixed doubles.
During her career, the 29-year-old Bertens won 10 singles and 10 doubles titles and reached her highest ranking in May 2019 when she ranked fourth in the world.
The Dutch player announced last June that she would retire at the end of 2021, but last week confirmed the end of her playing career after the current summer games and said she did not regret anything about the decision to retire after an ankle ligament injury played a role in this decision after undergoing for surgery last year.
