MILAN - From Raphael to Michelangelo, from Giotto to Mantegna and Rubens, many great masters of painting and sculpture represented the final days of the life of Jesus Christ, transforming the mystery of the Passion into immortal works of art.

On the occasion of Easter we have chosen ten, from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, which tell the last supper, the capture, the crucifixion, the deposition, the death, the piety and the resurrection of the son of God. Here are the works and websites places where you can admire them, waiting to do it in person.

Last Supper

it is the most famous pictorial work of Leonardo da Vinci: painted between 1494 and 1499, it is kept in the former Renaissance refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan.

The masterpiece, frescoed on the wall of the room, has been restored several times and, since 1980, has been listed by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.

It portrays the last meal of Jesus among the Apostles.

The site where you can admire it and discover history, curiosities and details in high definition is: cenacolovinciano.org Created in 1602 by Caravaggio, the work Capture of Christ, also known as "Taking of Christ", depicts the moment when Jesus, who appears immobile and sad, he is blocked by Judas;

the two figures, struck by an external light, almost seem to embrace.

The painting, in its unmistakable chiaroscuro, can be admired in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin and, in this period of closure, on the site nationalgallery.ie The fresco Christ in front of Caiaphas, made by Giotto around 1303, is kept in the Chapel of the Scrovegni of Padua, a World Heritage Site, and is part of the pictorial cycle "Stories of the Passion of Jesus";

it can be admired on the right wall, looking at the altar, or on the website cappellascrovegni.padovamusei.it The scene shows Jesus in the house of Caiaphas, the high priest, who tears the robe from his chest, while an armiger raises his hand to strike the son of God.

Christ crucified

is a work by Diego Velázquez made in 1631, and is part of a group of religious-themed paintings that the painter painted in Madrid after returning from a stay in Rome.

The work is full of spiritual and symbolic value and, despite the drama of the subject, instills a sense of serenity.

The painting is kept in the Prado museum in Madrid and we can now admire it by browsing the museodelprado.es site where history, curiosities and pictorial details are illustrated.

Deposition from the cross

is a marble sculpture created around 1178 by Benedetto Antelami: the work is a masterpiece of Gothic art of great modernity and humanity, and is located in the right transept of the cathedral of Parma.

The high relief scene has a strong dramatic impact and depicts the moment when the body of Christ, supported by John, is lowered from the cross.

There are Christian and classical iconographic elements with the personification of the sun and the moon.

We can admire the sculpture on the site of the Cathedral of Santa Assunta di Parma: piazzaduomoparma.com/cattedrale

The

Deposition from the Cross altarpiece

, made by Beato Angelico between 1432 and 1434, is kept in the new hall of the National Museum of San Marco, in Florence.

The central panel of the sacred altarpiece, dedicated to the deposition of Jesus, follows a pyramid scheme in which the horizontal band of the landscape and the diagonal figure of Christ are inserted, which stands out with the reclined head and the oblique body.

The colors are bright and the details very rich like the plants in the ground, painted in the smallest details, which allude to spring and the future rebirth of Christ.

To admire the work there is a video on the site polomusealetoscana.beniculturali.it Dead Christ is one of the most famous paintings by Andrea Mantegna, preserved in the Brera art gallery in Milan.

The work, created between 1475 and 1478, is famous for the innovative perspective view of the body of Christ lying down, which leads the viewer to fix his gaze on the feet.

Severe and expressive, the painting captures the moment before the burial of Jesus, when the body is still lying on the anointing stone, half covered by the shroud.

In the painting there are also the Virgin Mary, who wipes her tears, John while praying and, in the shadows, Mary Magdalene.

The pinacotecabrera.org site allows us to admire the painting in every detail.

The Pietà

is Michelangelo Buonarroti's most famous marble sculpture, made between 1497 and 1499, when the artist was just over 20 years old.

It is considered one of the greatest artistic masterpieces of all time: it portrays the naturalness, the powerful call and the emotion of the Virgin's feeling of pity towards the dead body of Jesus, lying on her legs.

After the vandal damage suffered in 1972, the statue is protected by a special crystal.

The work can be admired in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and on the vaticanstate.va/it website

Resurrection of Christ

is a work by Raffaello Sanzio, made around 1501 on the model of Perugino from which, however, the Renaissance painter from Urbino broke away, creating varied and animated landscapes and much more elaborate details.

The rich sarcophagus, the well-finished robes, the lively gestures and the full-bodied colors, in fact, create a greater plastic prominence to the figures, starting with Christ rising into heaven.

The Masp art museum in Sao Paulo, Brazil, hosts the painting that we can admire today on the masp.org.br website.

Resurrection of Christ or Easter Sepulcher

is a work by Pieter Paul Rubens painted in 1616 which can be admired in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. The figure of the reborn Christ is alive and with Michelangelo's influences, while around the angelic presences, rich in symbols, accentuate the dynamism; especially the figure on the right creates a luminous effect with its orange robe, attracting the viewer's attention.
