55,000 people stream into the Olympic Park to be present at the opening of the European Championships.

Munich – The official opening of the European Championships has lured the crowds to Munich's Olympic Park.

As the organizer announced, 55,000 people were there on Wednesday evening.

The opening in summery temperatures was accompanied by music, including by the sports friends Stiller and rapper Marteria.

The response was so great that admission was stopped at 8 p.m. three quarters of an hour before the start.

This confirmed the euphoria of the organizers.

Munich is "the perfect place for such a multi-sport event," said Paul Bristow, one of the inventors, enthusiastically on Wednesday.

So far, however, ticket sales have only reflected the great rush to a limited extent.

"We are satisfied, there is an upward trend," said Olympiapark boss Marion Schöne confidently, "I think that a lot of people will now decide at short notice and buy tickets".

Numerous competitions, especially in the Olympic Park (BMX, mountain bike, triathlon) and the supporting program can also be followed free of charge. The organizers are expecting a total of one million visitors during the Multi-EM.

The European champions will be determined in nine sports by August 21st.

"It's like a mini Olympics.

It's a cool opportunity for the city to experience what the Olympic Games might be like?" said sprinter and bobsleigh brakewoman Alexandra Burghardt, but then added: "I would have preferred to have bobsled down at Königssee instead of in Beijing.

That's why I thought it was a shame about the applications in the past.” mm
