Election results in Italy: vote by regions, in the Chamber and in the Senate

2022-09-26T14:53:16.500Z

The conservative coalition, led by the far-right Brothers of Italy, wins the elections and, according to projections, will have a majority in the Chamber of Deputies and in the Senate

With 93% of the vote counted, the projections point to a victory for the right-wing coalition led by the far-right Brothers of Italy formation, and which also includes the League and the conservatives of Forza Italia.

The right-wing coalition will add some 240 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, according to projections by RAI, the Italian public television, well above the 200 needed to achieve a majority.

Far are the 90 seats of the coalition of the left and the 40-50 of the populists of the 5 Star Movement.

The right will also have a majority in the Senate.

These are the results of each match, with a scrutiny already above 90%:

The great winner is Giorgia Meloni, the leader of the Brothers of Italy, who has achieved 26% of the votes, multiplying by six her support from four years ago (4%) and adding more than half the strength of her coalition .

Behind, Enrico Letta's Social Democrats have achieved 19% support and the populists of the Five Star Movement, 15%.

Although the right will predictably have a comfortable majority in the lower house and the Senate, its advantage in votes is tighter.

The right-wing coalition will obtain around 60% of the seats, although in votes it added 44%.

This contrast is not a surprise, but rather the expected result of an electoral system, the Italian one, which has a fairly pronounced majority bias.

The vote for territories

The maps below represent the strength of each party in the 28 plurinominal constituencies into which the Italian electorate is divided.

And now that?

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, will be in charge of sounding out the political groups until he finds a candidate to commission the formation of the Government.

Then, the elected person will need to obtain the confidence of the parliamentarians in the Chamber of Deputies and in the Senate.

Given the results at the polls, that assignment will probably go to the candidate of the extreme right, head of the coalition and of the most voted party, Giorgia Meloni.
