The Austrian Marko Arnautovic is threatened with a penalty for celebrating his goal in the European Championship preliminary round match against North Macedonia.
The European Football Union has confirmed the initiation of ethical and disciplinary proceedings.
Arnautovic was accused of insulting the North Macedonian player Ezgjan Alioski after scoring the 3-1 final score and also making racist remarks.
In its previous statements, the association had stated that there would be no investigations.
The association of North Macedonia announced on Facebook on Monday evening that it had sent a letter of complaint to UEFA calling for "the severest punishment" for the Austrian international.
Arnautovic had previously rejected the criticism of his jubilation.
"I am not a racist and I will never be one," Arnautovic emphasized in the team quarters in Seefeld, Austria.
“I was happy.
Of course there were words that hurt me too.
It was just an emotional battle. «The 32-year-old claims to have spoken out after the game with Alioski and finally sought a conversation with North Macedonia's captain Goran Pandev on Monday.
