Environmental activists demonstrate near the Dutch parliament

Hundreds of environmental activists from the Extinction Rebellion group demonstrated and closed off the area near the temporary headquarters of the Dutch parliament today to start a week of protests planned by the group in The Hague before the United Nations climate conference scheduled for the end of this month in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

The Associated Press reported that the demonstrators blocked some sites and roads near the parliament headquarters by standing or stretching in the middle of them, and carried banners that read, "We are part of an international movement fighting for a livable and just planet."

The group said in a letter distributed to journalists that 700 people participated in the demonstrations calling for climate justice.. It called for doing everything necessary to stop the loss of biodiversity and make the climate of the Netherlands "neutral" in 2025.

Demonstrators also called for greater cooperation between politicians and environmental researchers to set clear goals for the Glasgow Climate Conference scheduled for the period between October 31 and November 12.

These protests come a day after a major environmental march in the Belgian capital, Brussels, in which thousands and 80 organizations participated in an attempt to push world leaders to take bolder action in the fight against climate change.
