Epidemic | Tedros: WHO does not think China's zero policy is sustainable after considering virus behavior

World Health Organization (WHO) Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was pointed out by British media on May 10 that he was a rare "dynamic zero" policy adopted by China to deal with the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19). Criticized it as "unsustainable".

Tedros said at a press conference on the 10th that the WHO does not believe that China's policy on dealing with the new crown pneumonia "is sustainable after taking into account the behavior of the virus."

"We have discussed the issue with Chinese experts ... I think it would be very important for (China) to change strategy," he said.

Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme, added that the policy should also take into account its impact on human rights and the economy.

"We need to balance control measures with their impact on society and on the economy, which is not always easy to calibrate," he said.

Ryan said China wants to take drastic measures to stop the spread of the virus, but the ongoing outbreak has also shown the difficulty of preventing the spread of the highly contagious Omicron.
