EU alarm on extremism, Forza Nuova at the bar in the Senate

About ten days of negotiations and discussions after the assault on the CGIL headquarters were not enough to heal the rift in Parliament on the issue of neo-fascism.

Between mutual accusations, pointing fingers, distinction and bright tones, the debate in the Senate ended with the vote of two very different motions: one, on which the Pd, Leu, M5s and Italia viva found the synthesis, which asks the Government to "evaluate the methods for following up the constitutional dictate regarding the prohibition of reorganization of the dissolved fascist party and the consequent current legislation, adopting the measures within its competence to proceed with the dissolution of Forza Nuova and all political movements of clear fascist inspiration" . And a second one signed by the center-right which "commits the Government to evaluate the ways to implement every measure required by law to counter all - none excluded - subversive realities".

A confrontation that in the same hours was repeated with similar harshness in Strasbourg, where the European Parliament debated on the growth of extremists on the continent, with Lega and Conservatori who contested the Commission's reading, calling it "biased" and "not corresponding to reality of the facts ". "We have seen how neo-fascist groups in Rome have unleashed chaos by attacking the headquarters of a union - underlined the EU Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli -: this shows that hatred and intolerance are not only within clandestine organizations but they are increasingly exposed and risk undermining the stability of our democracies. We need a quick and broad response to the rise of violent instincts and racism. "

An even tougher confrontation was staged at Palazzo Madama. On the one hand, the parties that once supported the Conte government and now have found a synthesis on anti-fascism, albeit with softer tones in the agenda launched in the course of the afternoon, essentially an act of address to the government, in which they are conveyed the four motions, also signed by the group of the Autonomies. On the other Forza Italia, Lega and Fdi (the latter withdrew its motion to propose it again next week), united on this front on the day of the summit between Silvio Berlusconi, Giorgia Meloni and Matteo Salvini to reiterate, in essence, that violence of all colors must be condemned and that Parliament does not have the tools to urge the government to dissolve a party without a sentence certifying the crime of reconstituting the fascist movement. In the vote by show of hands, the various parties expressed themselves only on their own motion, with a couple of exceptions: Andrea Marcucci, unlike the rest of the PD group, voted against the center-right one, as did Sandro Ruotolo from the mixed group. .

The government in the discussion phase did not give an opinion, deferring to the motions.

Prime Minister Mario Draghi's line remains to wait: an assessment on the dissolution of Forza Nuova is underway, and will be developed taking into account the inputs from Parliament but above all the provisions of the judiciary.
