European Parliament passes Hong Kong-related resolution calling for boycott of Winter Olympics mission

On January 20, the European Parliament passed the resolution "On Violations of Fundamental Freedoms in Hong Kong", and strongly condemned the alleged deterioration of human rights and freedom of speech in Hong Kong, called for sanctions on relevant officials, and urged the European Union to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The European Parliament passed the resolution with 585 votes in favour, 46 against and 41 abstentions.

Parliament condemned the deterioration of human rights in Hong Kong, including restrictions on freedom of assembly and the press, and called on the Hong Kong government to release all political prisoners, and the European Parliament called for the dropping of charges against all peaceful protesters arrested in recent years.

In addition, the resolution also stated that the Chinese government is trying to legalize its authoritarian system internally and externally, and urged the Beijing government to repeal the "Hong Kong National Security Law".

The resolution says the national security law for Hong Kong hinders trust and cooperation between China and the EU.

In addition to urging the European Union to sanction officials for cracking down on human rights in Hong Kong, MEPs also called for a diplomatic and political boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

On January 20, the spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the European Union responded to the European Parliament's adoption of the resolution "On Hong Kong's Violations of Fundamental Freedoms", saying that China firmly opposes the above-mentioned resolution of the European Parliament.

The spokesperson said that China strongly urges the European Parliament to abide by international law and basic norms of international relations, stop interfering with the rule of law and judicial independence in Hong Kong SAR, stop slandering and distorting "one country, two systems", stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, and stop undermining the normal atmosphere of China-EU relations.
