Gold, gold, bronze: The German swimmers end the pool competitions at the European Championships with a veritable flood of medals. Olympic champion Florian Wellbrock cancels his open water start due to a weakened corona.

Isabel Gose is European Champion over 400 meters freestyle.

The Magdeburg native completed her medal streak on the final day of the European Pool Championships in Rome, having already won silver in the 800m and bronze in the 200m freestyle.

In 4:04.13 minutes, the 20-year-old relegated the Italian Simona Quadarella, European champion over 800 and 1500 meters, to second place.

Third was the Hungarian Ajna Kessely.

The second German finalist, Julia Mrozinski, finished eighth.

"I was hoping so much for the gold medal," said Gose, who was celebrating her greatest success.

"I'm relieved, but also totally exhausted," said the woman from Magdeburg, who swam the race from the front and thus dominated the competition.

Just a few minutes later, Gose's partner, Vice World Champion Lukas Märtens, secured the second gold medal for the German swimmers.

The man from Magdeburg clocked a time of 3:42.50 minutes, relegating the Swiss Antonio Djakovic to second place by 1.43 seconds.

The German success was completed by Henning Mühlleitner, who took third place in 3:44.53 minutes and took bronze.

Märtens had previously won silver in the 800 meters.

At the World Championships a month and a half ago in Budapest, he was decorated with silver over 400 meters.

"I saw Isabel's race and took her as an example," reported Märtens.

"I did my thing and knew that I was the fastest over the last few meters," said the 20-year-old.

In total, the German swimmers now have eight medals at the European Championships.

Florian Wellbrock ends EM prematurely

Meanwhile, Olympic champion Florian Wellbrock prematurely ended his participation in the European Championship.

After a corona illness in the preparation for the European Championship, the 24-year-old renounced the open water competitions.

Instead of going to the sea off Rome, the double world champion is going back to Magdeburg.

"Now mental and physical health comes first," he said, "you don't have to take the risk."

The German swimming star had already noticed on Tuesday evening in the 1500 m freestyle final that he had not yet caught up on his training deficit.

He just didn't want to swim for bronze, "he decided to go all-in," reported national coach Bernd Berkhahn, "but after 300 m it wasn't possible anymore." Open water therefore made »no sense«.

The next two years are much more important than the European Championship.

"It's not far to the Olympics," Wellbrock said with a view to Paris 2024.

Before that, after the Corona postponements, there are still two world championships and probably an EM on the program.
